Problem with Lace Scarf pattern

I’m trying to knit the Shimmering Lace Scarf from the 2005 Knitting Pattern A Day calendar (Friday, May 27). I checked their web site and I don’t find any corrections for this pattern but the way I read it–which may very well be wrong as I’m not that experienced–it won’t work.

The first row is as follows:
k1, (k1, k2tog x3, yo, k1 x5, yo, k2tog x3) repeat ( ) two more times, k1.

I’m not familiar with the “x3” and “x5”. I guessed that they mean to repeat the stitch immediately preceding by that number of times (eg. k2tog three times). If that’s right then I’m losing stitches on each row 1 and since the remaining rows of the pattern are just basically knit and purl rows I’m going to end up with a triangle rather than a 12" x 64" scarf.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

How many stitches do you start with?

If you punctuated it differently, you would balance out the inc and dec, but I don’t know how it would look, but the pattern would be balanced:

k1 (k2tog)x3, (yo, k1)x5, yo, (k2tog)x3

Hi Ingrid,

Thank you for replying.

After I posted I thought I probably should have included the number of stitches–oops. It starts with 56 stitches.

I’ve attached a file showing what the pattern looks like. Does this seem reasonable for your suggested correction?

Thanks again!

I believe it does! The way I drew it out I put a line like / for k stitches, an X for the k2togs, and an O for yo’s and the drawing of one repeat looked like this

/XXXO/O/O/O/O/OXXX/XXXO/O/O/O/O/OXXX/XXXO/O/O/O/O/OXXX/

That kind of looks like it, do you think? But it only comes to 55

You did it! There should be an additional “/” (knit stitch) at the beginning of the row.

Thank you so much. I’m off to frog a few rows and proceed with my friends new scarf!!

Guess I’d better let Accord Publishing know they need another correction page.

Thanks again, Ingrid.

I’ll say! Hope it works out for you!

Maybe you should change your tag to “Trust the pattern–NOT!”

Or at least “usually”!
