I’ve managed to double crochet to the part when I have to decrease for the ‘arm holes’ and I’m stumped.
I’d like to do it so that there is a triangle between the rows instead of a box and it says on one site that,
At the beg of the row, I chain 3+1 [COLOR=“Blue”]then ch 2 double crochet into [/COLOR]the double crochet of the previous row. This way a triange mesh will form instead of a rectangular one… and then I continue according to pattern…
At the end of the row, Form a triangle mesh similar to that above, crochet a double treble crochet, 1 mesh to the left in the row below.
I’ve understood the beg. row… it’s the end of row that I don’t understand.
If I do the chaining and then put it thru the row below, how do I get back to the upper row to continue crocheting?

End of the row: Form a triangle mesh similar to the one in case # 2. To make it, crochet a double treble crochet one mesh to the left in the row below. (Depending on tension of your thread you might will have to crochet a treble treble instead of treble crochet.).
When you finish the next to the last dc work a longer stitch into the end stitch of the previous row. They’re assuming a chain after the last dc will be eliminated thus working the decrease. Probably clear as mud. I like this method. I’ll have to remember should I ever pick up a hook again.
Do you have a ch bet your dc’s? Eliminating a ch will dec. If you don’t make the chain and have a longer stitch that leans from the top of the last dc to the end st in the row below you end up with a net dec.
Have you tried doing the dtr immediately after the last dc? This is one of those things that you get it or it’s a real PITA. I can see it because I don’t need it for my project.
Hi GrumpyGramma… I have done the dtr after my last double crochet and, of course, that gives me a nice post… but then I have to join it to the row below to make it into a triangle and that leaves me stuck on the below row and not where I have to be… at the end of the row above so I can keep on crocheting…
I have no idea how I get back to that row.
Of course, I can be reading it completely wrong… Oh, dear, I hope so!

Clearly we aren’t communicating effectively. I’m good at not communicating effectively. Let me try to explain it another way based on the assumption that your current row and the row before it are dc, ch across.
Say you have 10 dc in your current row with chains in between them, the previous row is the same. If you work to the end without decreasing you will end with 9 dc, ch, dc in turning ch of the previous row. So far so good?
Now you want to dec 1 st so you - work 8 dc, ch1, Do not work the ch as you have previously. Your hook is in the top of the dc. Work a double treble in the turning chain of the previous row (where you otherwise would have a dc) and when you complete it your yarn will be exactly where it should be.
I really hope that makes sense. Who is the crochet expert that isn’t around much? MGM? Maybe we’ll get really lucky and she’ll see this and come to our rescue.

The communication on my side was awful… I felt ignorant and beside myself for not understanding something I was sure I should know and understand and I didn’t.
The good news is - I’ve got it now!

I was thinking of the dtr as a st. that came from the top row down into the next row… no idea why…
In any case, I got off the computer and started to fiddle with the crochet once more… and after about 2 or 3 times of trying different things, the light dawned!
I can’t believe how simple this actually is! Ugh! Where was my head?
I can only sincerely apologize for driving you crazy along with myself - no need of it at all. My brain just wasn’t able to grasp the concept of the stitch being started in the row below and then crocheted up to the line above…

I’ve been in Fibro fog for about a week now and I should have remembered that… there’s no way to get thru fibro fog, you know…
Anyway, the back is almost completed. I’ve gotten thru the decreases and am doing the dc to the end. Then I will start the sides…

TEMA, please, no apologies needed. I’m sorry to hear about the fibro fog, I’ve not experience it myself but have days on end where nothing clicks. Sometimes the light just has to come on and will only do it in its own good time. I know how that part goes. I hope you feel better soon.
I am now starting the second frontal piece and, so far so good!
