# Probably an easy question

HI

First, here are the directions, and then i’ll pose the question i’ve stumbled upon.

for sleeves:
With Size 2 needles, cast on 38 sts.
1st rib row K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end.
2nd rib row P2, *k2, p2; rep from * to end.
Rep the last 2 rows twice more.
Change to size 3 needles.
Beg. with a k row, work in St st.
Work 4 rows.
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1 k3.
Work 5 rows.
Rep the last 6 rows unti lthere are 50 sts.

question: After doing the Inc row with the k3, M1 etc.,…
It says to Work 5 rows. Assuming that on the right
side, i do the same Inc row with k3, M1 etc…
what would i do on the wrong side? Just purl the sts.?

Thanks!!

You increase on the knit side then purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row, knit 1 row, purl 1 row and you are back to the increase row again which is then a knit row. bit long winded, but thats it

So, if i did the very first row (before working 5 rows) and ended up with 40 sts,…
to get to 50 sts, wouldn’t i do the following?

since the next row, being purl,…

Purl (1)
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1, k3 (2) =42 sts
Purl (3)
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1, k3 (4) =44 sts
Purl (5)

Above is the work 5 rows

Below is Rep the last 6 rows to get 50 sts…

Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1, k3 (6) =46 sts
Purl (7)
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1, k3 (8) =48 sts
Purl (9)
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1, k3 (10) =50 sts
Purl (11)

Hiya knittable,
K you would be working your increase row on the right side, finish that row and now you are ready for a wrong side row (row 1 of your ‘5’ rows) then right side (2) wrong side (3) right side (4) wrong side (5). Now you’ll do those LAST 6 rows until you have 50 stitches. These rows will be in stockinette stitch, knitting on right side rows and purling on wrong side rows.

Meaning you’re only going to do the increase every six rows until you have your 50 sts. So you’ll do the whole six row pattern five times and then do the increase row one final time.

If I understand you, I think doing what you think is correct will make the sleeves too short, do you understand? To get to your 50 stitches doing it your way, you will only be doing about 11 rows total. You want your increases to be gentle so to speak and not very visable. In other words, if you lay out what you have knit flat, you don’t want big bulges on the sides indicating increases every other row, you want it to not be noticable, but the increases make the sweater wider gradually for the upper arm.

She is correct telling you what she did.

After you have changed to the larger needles, you should do 4 rows, 1 row k, 1 p, 1k, 1p then your k increase row, which is row 5 (+2 40)stitches . On row 6p the row, 7k the row, 8 p row, 9 k the row, 10 p row, then on row 11 do another increase(+2 42), then row 12 purl the row, 13, k, 14p, 15 k, 16p, 17 increase (+2 44), 18 p, 19k, 20p, 21k, 22p, 23inc (+2 46), 24p, 25 k, 26 p, 27 k, 28p, 29 inc (+2 48) 30p, 31k, 32p, 33k, 34p, 35in (+2 50!!!)

Does that help? Hope I didn’t totally confuse you!

HI. Thanks so much. Sometimes i really need things spelled out. I clearly wasn’t thinking well enough… i would guess that the sleeve i’d be knitting if i followed my
own interpretation would be for a doll. thank for helping me out. Really…

Thanks for your help

Hey, your’re welcome! I have had these ladies explain more things to me and then I have to hit my head because it was, “Why couldn’t I see that?” I knit sweaters all the time as they are my favorite and so I knew right what you weren’t seeing. Glad I could help and let us see the sweater when you are finished, ok? I look forward to it and will be watching.

Hi there…i sure will. I’m so grateful to you and others who have helped me out. Happy knitting!!

Ok the directions for the “last six rows” state:
Inc row K3, M1, k to last 3 sts, M1 k3.
Work 5 rows.

Which means you are going to increase by 2 every 6th row. YOu will do st st for 5 rows starting with a purl row (purl a row, knit a row, purl a row, knit a row, purl a row) then do an increase row, increasing by 2 stitches. It will take you a total of 5 repeats or 30 rows to increase to your 30 stitches.

Hope that helps!
