Probably a dumb question about yarn overs

this has been bothering me to death.

when i do a yarn over, and i get over to the next row… DO I STITCH THE YARN OVER? or do i let it fall off the needle and get to the next stitch? or what am i doing? :\

this is probably so basic and obvious but it is not a question answered ANYWHERE! :frowning:

i’ll give you psychic chocolate and hugs if you answer this.

You usually knit (or purl) the YO unless the directions specifically ask you to drop it. A YO is one of many increases. I think it’s most known for leaving a pretty hole in your work–the basis of most lacey knits.

That’s not a dumb question at all! I strugged with that doo.

You do knit or purl the yarn over like it were a “normal” stitch. I think it’s somewhat rare that you would drop it or something, and it would definitely tell you to do so.

Drop stitch patterns (also known as elongated stitch) would tell you to drop it on the next row. Otherwise, work it as a regular stitch.

“The only dumb question is the one you didn’t ask.” Something my dad used to say.

Yes, as has already been said, you knit into the yarn over–it just feels weird at first; somehow it just seems wrong. But you get used to it pretty fast.

I fretted over the same thing for a long time. Not dumb at all.
