Pre-Washing Question

Hello!

I’m new, my name is Rosie

I’m knitting in maroon and gold wool at the moment, and I noticed my bamboo needles are getting stained from the maroon wool.

This does not bode well for getting caught in the rain, or washing my item! I’m really concerned the colours are going to bleed together if I try to wash it when I’ve completed it.

I’ve never heard of pre-washing for knitting items, and my pattern did not suggest it either.

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can wash my item without ruining it - I’m a little bit too far into the project to prewash my wool, so I’m just going to carry on.

Also, does anyone know HOW to prewash wool? wouldn’t it get massively tangled and awful?

thanks in advance!

This happens with darker colors and prewash isn’t necessary. When you get finishing, wash it with some vinegar in the water to set the dye.

thanks suzee! I’ll def. try this! will the stains come out of the needles do you think?

They’ll lighten up. I knit a shawl with a dark teal yarn and the needles picked up some color from it, but it doesn’t rub off onto anything else.
