Hey ya’ll. I just found out my best friend is pregnant, and I want to knit her a poncho/coverup for when she nurses. (I figured that if I started now, I’d have plenty of time!) I was given one and it was perfect for nursing in public, on chilly nights, and when company was at the house. It kept me from being shunned to a back room to keep the men from being uncomfortable! Anyway, I’ve been looking, and I haven’t found that PERFECT pattern-I was wondering if anyone had a special pattern that they would share. I really would help alot, since I have my own to keep up with and he hates me getting online! Thanks alot!
Poncho/coverup for nurshing mothers?
Wow, you would have been shunned to the back of the room? I guess I have always lived in liberal breastfeeding places. That or I just don’t care! :roflhard: Are you looking for something one-sided or does it matter? I would think you could use just about any poncho pattern. I would do it in cotton or acrylic so it can be washed a lot and it won’t be too hot.
Hehe…I was the first to have a kid in our group of friends, and they were not used to seeing boobs! I used to just whip them out to freak them out! I want something that she can wear as a poncho, or just to cover up, so i guess 2 sided. The one I have is openwork, which caused a problem, since my son would get fingers and toes wrapped up and stuck! I guess I could use any pattern, but I haven’t found the “perfect” pattern. I’m way too picky about what I knit. Just wanted to know if anyone has a favorite. Or, a favorite baby blanket/clothing item that is unisex.
If you check out the patterns and click on ponchos, choose the villa pattern, you could knit it with larger needles and thinner yarn to make it lacier

thanks! I found out that 2 ladies I work with are preg. too! Maybe this can be my new baby gift…as long as they nurse!!!
I never understood how those coverups worked. I just used a thin receiving blanket in public, and whipped the boobs out at home… my house, my boobs… don’t like it, don’t come over! :roflhard: The only exception I made was when my FIL and his wife visited. I would cover up then, but that was out of respect to them. If they lived here in town, they would have been over enough to get used to it!
How bout this thing? I think it is so funky.
There was also a pattern on knitty.com. It is a top for nursing mothers (instead of a poncho). I also just used a thin blanket in public, until DD realized what those little arms and hands were for. By then I was so used to nursing in public that we were both very good at it.

This has nothing to do with knitting but on wed night there was a programme on the telly & it was called extraordinary breastfeeding. There was a woman who was still breastfeeding her 8yo daughter :shock: . Now that would cover a breast no problem.
ummmmmmm, okay. not TRYING to be judgmental but does one suppose there might be some attachment issues going on here? How is this even practical? Anyone with good insights or personal experience?
BTW, that Charles pattern turns out really nice - I made 4 (!!!) for Christmas gifts - MAN! I never want to do that much garter stitch in such a short time frame again. Everyone loved them, though, and i recommend using the Berroco yarn suggested (Foliage) - it is a little pricey but the drape is beautiful! The fringe really finishes it nicely - maybe it could be added after the bambino is weaned?
You know, I tried the blanket in public, but being a first timer I was super clumsy…I feel the same was about the “my house, my boobs” rule nicole!
I think I should cross stitch that real big and hang it over my “nursing chair” for the next kid!
I’m not a small girl, and when I went looking for “nursing” tops, you know, with the flaps or holes under the arms, they were all for little chicks. It was SO much easier to just wear a poncho over a l/s black shirt. That way my ever hungry son wouldn’t have to wait!
You know, I am all for nursing your child for a while; I mean, saves money, bonding, etc., but I stopped when my son was 6 mths b/c he got teeth. I think 8 years is a little odd. I have a friend who realised it was time to stop when her DD pulled up her shirt in a store and said “mommy boobie?” :shock:
