Pocket question

Hi, I’m working on a poncho with a hand warmer pocket.

I’ve begun the pocket on a spare set of needles.

Then I began the poncho and am to the point where I “place pocket openings”. I know I’ve not proceed correctly with the instructions, because I continued to knit in the round. I think what is happening is that I’m to initiate the pocket portion and let the rest of the round go until the opening is complete. I just can quite understand how this is to take place. Does anyone know of a good site or reference piece on creating pockets? Thanks so much for your help!!

Can you put the directions for that part here?

Yes!

I’ll start at the portion that says “pocket openings” (at this point I’ve also got a ‘pocket lining’ 52 stitches in length and 2 inches in width on a holder along with my main work which is 236 sts in a round and 4" in width):

[ul]a) Next row: K85 turn.
b) Next row: P52 turn, continue on just-worked 52 sts and leave remaining sts unworked.
c) Next row: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts of segment, SSK, K1-50 sts
work 3 rows even.
d) Rep last 4 rows 6 times more - 38 sts (28 rows total). Leave these sts on a st holder.
e) With RS facing, rejoin MC, at bottom of pocket and knit across 52 sts on holder from pocket lining. Knit to end of rnd. Knit 29 rounds even.
f) Join Pocket: Next rnd: K40, place 38 sts from st holder on top of next 38 sts and knit through both sets of sts to join pocket. Knit to end of rnd
[/ul]

Oh gosh, its just so hopeless. I understand a & b, on c I’m confused about “last 3 sts of segment” followed by “K1-50”. Then, at what point am I joining the “pocket openings” I began with?

Thank you so so much for any insight!!

Generally, you’ve been working in the round. For the pocket section, they want you to work back and forth (hence the ‘turn’ )for the area between the pockets.

So:

a) knit 85 stitches, and although there are still stitches left in the round, you turn your work because you will be working back and forth for a while on the 52 stitch ‘segment’ that will be the part behind the pocket that you already knit.

b) after you turn your work, you’ll purl 52 stitches and turn again

c) Now you’re decreasing at the ends of this 52 stitch ‘segment’

Repeat for the number of rows stated and put those stitches on a holder.

Then you’ll start knitting in the round again, and in the space where you had the stitches on a holder, you’ll knit on one edge of the pocket and work in the round for 29 rows.

To attach the other edge of the pocket, you’ll be knitting the stitches from the pocket and the stitches from the holder together, one from the pocket and one from the holder (after you put them on a needle) and then continue in the round.

Make sense?

I think that if you get the idea of how this whole thing goes together, the directions make sense.

Good luck with it, and if you have any more questions, feel free!

Ingrid, I can’t thank you enough!! I’m printing out your instructions which make much more sense!
