Plymouth Yarn Child's hat, scarf and mittens F70

Hi, could you advise me how to cast on correctly in the middle of a row. I’m knitting the mittens and I’m stuck on the thumb. The pattern goes like this:

K16 sts, ( and next 13 sts) TURN. Cast on 1 stitch and purl back 12sts incl cast on st. TURN, cast on 1 st k across next 13 sts incl cast on st.

This is to create the thumb. I am sure I need to turn the work to cast on the stitch (on the purl side) then turn it back to continue knitting across. I did this for the first cast on stitch but when it came to the second cast on stitch on the way back it didn’t seem right and looked untidy. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you

If you’re just casting on single stitches, the thumb loop or e-loop cast on method is fine.

If it was a larger number of sts, maybe 5 or more you might want a sturdier cast on but this works well for single sts.

Thank you, I was over thinking this, as I often do! I appreciate your help and video, as usual your advice was spot on.
