Ok, I have the front and the back finished on my grandson’s sweater and am starting the sleeves and have run into a problem with the increases. Here are the directions:
(I have already knit the first five rows for the cuff) Change to stockinette stitch. Increase 1 st each side every 4th row 6 (10,11,11) times and every 6th (0,0,2nd) row twice-38 (42,46,50) sts.
I took a note pad and wrote out row 1-44 and inserted the increase rows every 4th row, but then I couldn’t figure out which row the second increase went. I am using the largest size directions , in other 11 times and 2nd time.
First off, should I do the first increase on row 4, then rows, 8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36, 40, 44? That will give me 46 stitches. Now if I increase every 2nd row twice, that is row two and row 4 and I have already increased the first time in row 4. What am I doing wrong?
I know this will take some time for someone to look at, but I sure would appreciate the help. I am stumped at what I am not seeing.
After you’ve done the increases on every 4th row, then you begin the increasing on every 2nd row after that. You don’t try to do them at the same time.
Well no, that’s the standard way of writing patterns. You just do things step by step. If they wanted you to do the decreases together, the words `at the same time’ are used.
See, now this is why new knitters have so much trouble! I got this pattern from Lion Brand and when I ask for help here, I asked for help there as well so that I could complete the sleeves asap. Here is THEIR reply which is stupid because the pattern says SECOND not TWO TIMES. Now, I see that both you ladies said the same thing about the pattern, which is basically that I would do the last two increases in row 46 and 48 so I am going to ignore the LION BRAND people and do what you say and hope it comes out ok.
Complete the inc every 4th row 11 times.
You then go on to inc two more times, every 6th row.
Lion was saying every 6th row because that’s what the instructions for the smallest size say. They maybe didn’t realize you were doing the larger pattern, where the increase is on every 2nd row.
ETA: So they were kinda right, just not on the size you’re doing.
