I’m fairly new to knitting. I’m having problems with a stuffed toy I’m trying make for my son. This is what it say to do:
Bottom
CO 20 sts on circular needle. The bottom is worked back and forth in Stockinette Stitch.
Row 1 (WS): Purl
Row 2 (RS): K1, M1, Knit to last stitch, M1, K1.
Repeat last 2 rows until you have 48 sts.
Work in St st 14 rows ending on a WS row.
Body
Turn to right side.
K 48, PM (this marker will become to beginning of the round, Marker 1), Pick up and knit 14 sts along strait edge and then pick up and knit 28 sts along edge of increase rows, PM, Pick up and knit 20sts, PM, Pick up and knit 28 sts along edge of increase rows and 14 sts along strait edge, PM. (152 sts)
: I thought I started in rows and went into rounds but I can’t figure it out. I’ve been trying for weeks someone please help!
Welcome to Knitting Help!
Yes, that sounds right. Start by knitting back and forth, increasing at each end of the row. You should wind up with 48sts across and a flat, funnel shape. Then knit straight for 14 rows. Now you’re going to begin to knit in the round by picking up sts down the straight edge, along the slanted, increase rows, along the cast on edge, up the slanted rows and the straight row to the original live sts on the needle. The directions should proceed on from there for knitting rounds and slipping your markers.
Possibly this pattern
From what you’ve given us, you are starting in rows by knitting back and forth then picking up the edge stitches to work in the round. There are a few pinch points for new knitters in the instructions.
If the grief comes from ending on a WS row, after all of your increases are done and you have 48 stitches on a knit row, turn and purl across. That purl row is your ending row for the bottom.
And lastly, if it’s the M1 increase, check out the increase videos for your knitting method here. I dare say you can likely get away with a kfb instead of a M1.
Can you link to your pattern or give us a name so we might be able to find a picture of the little critter you’re knitting?
Yes, you can use the rows to help space out the sts that you need to pick up. On the straight edges it’s 14sts in 14 rows so pick up one stitch in each row. For the slanted edges you need to pick up 28sts in about 14 rows. You could pick up one stitch in each row here (14sts on each slant) and then increase in each of those 14 picked up sts on the next round.
