I am following a pattern for a tote bag and in the directions it tells me to “Knit across the 50sts.Pick up 20 sts in 20 ridges. 1 ridge remains-skip it-”. What does that mean???
The Pattern is from “Two Old Bags” there is no link to this pattern.
Directions: BASE:cast on 50 sts. Knit 42 rows in garter st.
BODY: Knit accross the 50 sts. Pick up 20 sts in 20 ridges. 1 ridge remains-skip it-. With the other end of the needle pick up the origional 50 sts. Knit these 50 sts then pick up 20 sts in the next 20 ridges. Place marker(140sts).
Well it’s a little hard to tell without more pattern details or a link to the pattern if possible. Sounds like you’ve been knitting in garter stitch (knit every row) and now they want you to turn the work 90 degrees and pick up stitches along the side of the work. Pick up one st in each of 20 garter ridges (but not the twentyfirst ridge). See the videos at the top of the page for how to pick up sts if you need to.
Do you mean is the “skip it”? It sounds like you’ve got 21 ridges (which equals 42 rows). So you pick up one stitch for 20 ridges and skip the last one. I don’t know what comes next without a pattern link.
Thanks for all the help guys!!!

Yep you do the same thing for the opposite side. You’ll probably be joining to knit in the round at this point.
