When it says “as they face you” it means when you are holding the work in your left hand and are ready to start the row.
Each stitch has two sides. If you knit the stitch the other side will be a purl. If you purl the stitch the other side will be a knit. So when you turn your work the stitches are opposite of what you just did. You purl the ones that look like purls and knit the ones that look like knits. Take a look at it on both sides and you can see what I mean. Here’s a sample that I made to help with this common problem. You can see in the sample that as it faces me I’ve got 4 knits, 4 purls, 4 knits. Turn it around and I’ve got 4 purls, 4 knits, 4 purls…just the opposite.
