Please help with pattern instructions

Hi I’m new to the forum, my name is Shelley. I’m starting a new knitting pattern and am stumped on the directions it’s giving. It says:

3rd row: P1, *yfwd, Sl1, K2tog, psso, yrn, P3.

I’m confused, if I P1, isn’t my yarn already forward? then if I slip one, when do I put the yarn back to knit 2 together? and I’m not sure what a “yrn” looks like or is?

Has anyone done this type of pattern before? It looks pretty and will create an eyelet pattern.

Help!

in this case, I would think the yfwd actually means to put the yarn as if to knit. Then the yrn means to put the yarn as if to purl.

I would look to see if you have any abbreviations that came with the pattern. They should clarify it for you.

“yfwd” and “yrn” are both British terms for what we call yarn overs. There are several different ways to do yarn overs depending on what the stitch before and after the yarn over is. We just call them all yarn overs, but the Brits have a specific name for each of them.

Here is a really good site that explains all about the ins and outs of yarn overs, including the British stuff. There may be more here than you want to know, but you’ll learn a lot by reading through this stuff. :-)The section titled, “So, um, what’s this ‘yfwd’ thing?” is especially pertinent.

See if this doesn’t answer your need. If you need further help, give a yell.

when do I put the yarn back to knit 2 together

You’ll be bringing it back over the ndl when you K2tog…thereby creating a YO (that Merigold ref’d). That’s part of the eyelet creation. (Along with the psso and yrn.) Moving the yarn fwd and back will cause increases, with holes (which is what you want for the effect), and offset the decreases you’re making with the K2tog and psso.

Thanks so much, I’m going to give your advice a try. It’s a lovely pattern, just wanted to give it a chance.

Great website reference. I’m going to go try it out and see if I can figure it out. One of the YO must add the stitch back in that was lost in the K2tog, psso, so I’ll see how it goes. Thanks so much! Shelley
