Please help with pattern instructions for beginner

Hi everyone
I hope someone can help me translate these instructions. This is my first knitting project a jumper so have no clue how to do a neckband. Sorry if this is really basic. Cant seem to find much on youtube. E.g’join right shoulder seam’ is that when u put the pieces together and the jumper is right way up your right hand side?

Next ‘pick up and knit 11sts evenly’ i have no clue how to pick up and knit from where? And why does it say evenly, isnt it consecutive sts?

Thanks for your help

The right shoulder is defined as if you had the sweater on. You’re going to join the right front shoulder to the back.
You’re to pick up sts along the left side of the neck starting at the open shoulder then knit across the held sts in front, up the right side of the shoulder and across the back held sts. Here’s a video for picking up and knitting:

Thank you for that!

Ah, It says “pick up and knit 11 sts evenly” bc you DON’T normally pick up one on every consecutive stitch along a neckline. Because you want to pick up sts at a rate that will match the stitch gauge of the new section (in this case, a neckband). Things like row gauge being different than stitch gauge, or picking up along a diagonal, or if the neckband is to be knit to a different gauge than the body, all factor in.

I’m making it sound more confusing than it is. This is a lot easier to understand visually; a good knitting how to book should have a thorough illustrated explanation–Principles of Knitting is my favorite.

But since in this case the number of stitches is already prescribed for you, all you really should have to do is what the instructions say, and try to space the given number of pick-ups as evenly as possible along that section.
