Please help with a stitch/trim

Hi, I was wondering if some one could give me a little bit of help with getting a stitch/trim pattern down. I am not sure what type of stitch I am trying to do here (I am pretty new at crochetting), I thought I had it but mine I find stands up too much.

I find mine the “braid” is standing out too much. I also find that when I connect the colors it starts to fold/lean one way, rather than lie flat.

What kind of stitch are you using–sc (single crochet) or ss (slip stitch)? In general, single crochets are taller than slip stitches. If you’re already using a ss, though, you may have to switch to a less bulky yarn to get the braid flatter.
