I am knitting a teddy bear and I am on the head.
I have cast on 28 stitches and worked 2 rows in knit.
The pattern then states the following:-
Inc. in next stitch, K5, inc. in next stitch (4 times) (36 sts).
No matter which way I try this I end up with 33 stitches. Can someone please explain in simple terms what it is I should exactly be doing.
This is only the 2nd thing I have knitted, the first being some baby bootees.

Do you have a link to the pattern? this might help to better understand the issue.
Please post a pattern link or the name of the pattern. There are a lot of teddy bear patterns.

After the row stated above there is a knit row, then the following is:
Inc. in next stitch, K7, inc, in next stitch (4 times) (44 sts)
Knit row
Inc. in next stitch, K9, inc. in next stitch (4 times) (52 stitches)
Knit 26 rows
The following 13 rows are to shape the top of the head and involve descreasing stitches every other row which I can follow ok.

There isn’t a link to the pattern, but the name of the bear is Benjamin Bear, the company name is Inspirations. I’ve looked them up on the internet but can’t find any info on the company.
It is a teddy bear kit that came complete with yarn, needles, accessories etc.
I have posted some more of the pattern above if this is of further help.

I think we’re still missing some directions even on the first row. When it says “[U]Inc. in next stitch[/U], K5, inc. in next stitch (4 times)” at the very beginning of the row, are there any sts preceding that instruction?
For each of the following rows you quote, the number of increases (assuming we’re increasing by one in each st) is 5sts and yet the pattern is increasing by 8sts at each increase row (28,36,4,52). Are there any directions for how to do the increases? Check early on in the instructions, even before the cast on.

Finished total 36 stitches
Next increase
KFB, K7, KFB - Knit front & back, knit 5, KFB - 9 stitches
KFB, K7, KFB - 9 stitches
KFB, K7, KFB - 9 stitches
KFB, K7, KFB - 9 stitches
K8 - 8 stitches
Finished stitches 44
I believe that this give you a “flat” section with a semi-circle in front. Does this sound like the picture you have?
I’ve had a good look again at the pattern and there are no further instructions on how to do the increases. It’s a mystery. Thank you for your help.
Thank you so much for taking the time to try and sort this out for me. I am going to have a go today using your suggestions and will come back tomorrow with an update. Fingers crossed.

Hi Chris, I admire you for re-writing the pattern but I’m not sure that I understand. Are you counting the KFB as one st? When you finish the round, shouldn’t it count for 2sts in your finished sts total?
Hi Dennis, If the increases are fairly evenly spaced around the head and you’re not doing any shaping other than making a ball for the head, you could do 8 ~evenly spaced increases on each increase row. It will keep to the st count that you’re supposed to get (28 to 36, 44, 52) and perhaps be the simplest way to expand the sts on your needle.
