Please Help! Sl-5-wyif?

Hi!
I’ve been working from a Debbie Bliss pattern (Winter Brights Lattice Stitch Sweater) and in one row of the pattern it reads:

"6th row: k1, sl-3-wyif…etc.etc.
I know that “Sl-3-wyif” means slip 3 with yarn in front… but when i tried doing that, I ended up with a long strand of loose wool on the wrong side of the piece?
I was confused, so I looked at the “Abbereviations” section, and it reads:

Sl-3-wyif with yarn in front of work, slip the next 3 sts, take yarn to back of work.
I don’t understand how this works without leaving a large strand of loose yarn at the back of the work?
I’ve just been putting the yarn in front of the work, moving three stitches over, and then continuing knitting?

Also, on another row, it reads, “Insert right hand needle under loose strand and k into next st, bringing st out under strand”
^^ Isn’t exactly specific, and how on earth do I do that?!

Any help is MUCH appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

Can you provide a link?

It’s supposed to leave a strand across the stitches. Make a swatch of the stitch pattern if you’re concerned to see what it looks like.

Also look up quilted lattice stitch on YouTube. There’s a good video of how do it even if the number of slipped stitches is different than yours.

Yes, a pattern link would be very helpful. It sounds like you’re doing something similar to a Butterfly Stitch. The video shows doing multiple strands but I believe the technique would be the same otherwise.

Oops! I missed the quilted lattice stitch recommendation. Jan’s suggestion is much better.

Because of the later direction:
“Insert right hand needle under loose strand and k into next st, bringing st out under strand” this sounds like a variation on the butterfly stitch that GG recommended.
The long loop of yarn should be on the RS or public side of the knitting for this stitch, not on the WS or back of the work. Is it possible that the slip sts with yarn in front on a right side row?

It looks like it might be a RS row from the photo.

I’d carefully follow the directions because it seems you understand and see if it turns our right. You can always use a lifeline if you’re worried or try with some scrap yarn.
