Please help! Question about Hand in Hand Vest

I’m making a vest for my dad and have arrived at the V-neck shaping but I’m a little confused.

It says:

Armhole shaping starts with this:

Cont in patt, BO 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows - 118 sts remain. Work dbl dec (BO 1, SSP on RS/BO 1, K2TOG on WS) at each armhole edge 7 times - 14 sts dec at armhole edges. At the same time. when work measure 17 3/4 inches from CO, on next RS row, shape V neck as follows: Work even patt to center 2 sts, place next 2 sts on holder, join second ball of yarn, work even in patt to end.

I’ve done the above and now I’m at…

Working each side separately and cont armhole shaping, work dbl dec at each neck edge 2 times, then dec 1 st at each neck edge every other row 16 times - 24 sts remain each side after neck and armhole shaping is complete.

I understand what it says, But if I keep doing armhole shaping for that amount of rows won’t it be too close in to the chest at the front? :??

I guess not if that is what it says to do. Are you getting row gauge right as well as stitch gauge? The length of the vee neck will depend on that.

You should have 24 sts on each shoulder, so that would be about 5" or so. Plenty wide enough.

So how much more decreasing at the armholes do I have to do? That’s what’s confusing me. I thought I stopped but it tells me to go on and it seems like a lot.

Yeah, everything is good with the gauge and all.

Dec 1 st at the armhole edge every 16 rows.

Thanks!
