Please help me with this pattern

This knit scarf pattern is so confusing, I’m not good at reading the pattern and the chart, so can you help me by explain the pattern step by step each row, so i can follow easier.
Here is the pattern:
Cast on 8.
Begin the 8 center sts of the cable pattern. Work the cable pattern
rows 1-20 once times then rows 1-15, omitting the bobble in the last
cable. At the same time increase one st each side 4 times (first
increase at row 2), then every 4th row 5 times. (26 sts).
Slip1 st on the holder/other needle, k1, Slip 1 st on the holder/other
needle, p1, * rep to end.
Work 12 more rows in 1x1 rib. Do not cut the yarn!
Using yarn from the other skein, work 13 rows of 1x1 rib with the
stitches from the holder/other needle. Cut the yarn.
(WS) K1 from the front needle, K1 for the back needle* rep 4, P1 from
the front needle, P1 for the back needle* rep 2 more times ,K1 from the
front needle, K1 for the back needle* rep 4 more times (First row of
the cable pattern). Continue the cable pattern until repeated 5 times
ending with row 19 (WS).
K2tog, P2tog* rep to end. Work 13 more rows in 1x1 rib ending with a
WS.
K1, M1* rep 4 more times, P1,M1* rep 2 more times, K1, M1* rep 4 more
times. (WS) Begin the cable pattern starting with row 15 and omit the
bobble in row 20. Work the cable pattern once, then rows 1-8. At the
same time, decreasing one st (starting with row 2) every side ever four
row 5 times, then every other row 4 times. BO all stitches.
And for the chart or diagram , please go the link below:

Here is my question:
The pattern said" cast on 8 st "but the chart shown cast on 18 st ( that’s confusing)
and then “Begin the 8 center sts of the cable pattern. Work the cable pattern
rows 1-20 once times then rows 1-15, omitting the bobble in the last
cable” but the chart shown the begin center sts of cable pattern is only 6 sts???
“Slip1 st on the holder/other needle, k1, Slip 1 st on the holder/other
needle, p1” , what does it mean?
So that’s all my question and if you have some time , please write down this pattern by each row. Thank you for your help

You work on the 6 middle sts and a st on either side of it, that’s the 8 sts.

The “Slip1 st on the holder/other needle, k1, Slip 1 st on the holder/other needle, p1” instructions are for making the slit so you can pull one end through. Do just what it says - have another needle or stitch holder ready, put on 1 on it, knit the next st on the L needle, slip the next st to the holder, p1 from the L needle and keep repeating that across.

I’m sorry you’re having so much problem reading patterns; if you need to have them written out stitch by stitch, perhaps you need something easier to start on, and save the cabled patterns until you get more experience.

The cable instructions are done over the 6 sts, not just 2 - put 3 sts on the holder, let them flop down to the front of your work, knit 3 from the Left needle, then knit the 3 that were being held.

I would be confused, too, and I’ve been knitting for decades. First, I much prefer row-by-row cabling instructions (I can handle charts for lace) and would probably write them out myself to save a headache later. Plus, it takes careful reading to catch the “at the same time” directions - and once you catch them, it all makes a lot more sense.

Basically, you do cast on 8, and then you add on to each side in rows 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, and 25. While you’re adding these stithes, you’re doing the cable pattern almost twice through 35 rows (no bobble on the 2nd cable). (This also means that you have 10 rows of no increases.) Then you split the stitches so you have the hole in the middle (this is the part where you put stitches on the holder).

I’m working on a sleeve for a much more simple pattern than this, and I’ve transcribed the 3-sentences of instruction to give me row-by-row directions, which I then check off as I go. It helps me keep track of where I am and requires a lot less thought as I chug away at the sleeve.

I agree with SuzeeQ that you might want to work your way up to this pattern and start with something a bit more simple. Tackle this pattern when you can write out the row-by-row directions yourself. There are many more patterns out there that will cause fewer headaches.

yup, thise “at the same time” things are really bad sometimes…

increase every 4 rows by 1 stitch for 20 inches, at the same time, make a V cut, a shoulder portion and do a pattern that does not repeat evenly… I know this kind of stuff. This here is just a fun example… but I am with you.

I often make photocopies of the pattern I work with. And then I take a pen or highlighter and mark stuff along the way. That really helps.

Make “joining lines” on it, mark things easily forgotten, write on the side for stuff that you need to add, cross out what you have done, or make a check mark on the side… all that is much easier then.

And reading the basic pattern to the end, visualizing the garment… I lately did a complicated cable routine with a chart almost without the chart, because I had an easier time reading my knitting than following each line.
