Please help me understand this chart

As some of you know my friend has been asking me to make her a cabled loop scarf. I asked her to sign up for ravelry and find me a pattern because I still wasn’t clear on what she wanted. She finally sent me a link

The chart for the pattern is a bit confusing. I’ve never worked straight from a chart before either. I don’t understand how it is saying the CO row in the pattern stitch and then in seed stitch are different?

Like am I supposed to cast on normally then start seed stitch in row one? This is what I am understanding of the pattern which I think I am wrong, then I have no idea what goes on either sides lol. Help please

Yes, the seed stitch begins on the first row, with 2 purls at the beg and end of it. The lower picture on this project shows what it looks like to start. Work 5 sts in seed, 16 in the cable pattern which is in stockinette (odd rows are the RS so those are knit) then 12 sts of seed at the end of the row.

So what I wrote out is correct? After I do a cable do I come back in with a purl if I did a purl before the cable? and a knit if it was a knit before the cable?

Where do you see stockinette?

I think what you wrote is off a bit, maybe not - P2, K1, P1 repeat for 12 stitches, P2

K1 p1 for 12 sts, p2 and do the cable over 16 sts, then p2 and k1 p1 over the last 5 sts. Maybe that’s not it exactly, but a minor difference like starting with a knit instead of p or p instead of k won’t matter, as long as the following rows follow the seed st pattern.

Just tried it and it wasn’t working :frowning: I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but it is not looking like seed stitch after the cable.

On the first row? It may take a couplethree rows before it looks like it. With the first row, you establish the stitch pattern; on the rows after that, knit the sts that look like purls and purl the ones that look like knits.

I know what the issue is but I don’t know how to rewrite it! It’s cause the pattern isn’t even on both sides of the cable, and I’m knitting on straight needles!

In looking at the project pictures, it looks like some people had the 12 sts of seed st on one side, some on the other, unless the photos were flipped. Maybe if you look through some of them that can help? There’s quite a few comments which would seem to be helpful.

The seed stitch chart is shown over 12 sts, but the diagram shows 5 on one side of the cable and 12 on the other side, so you should go by that. The cable stitches seem to all be stockinette with 2 purls on both sides of them, so you would do p2, k12, p2 on the RS rows where you don’t cross the sts, and k2 p12, k2 on the WS rows. All the rest of the sts are in seed.

Try it without writing it out and just look at the stitches instead. When you start up the seed stitch after the cable, see what the stitch from the previous row is. If it’s a knit, purl it and vice versa. If you’re worried about the first row after the cast on, don’t. The seed st pattern will work out and you’ll see it after a few more rows. Just make sure to knit the purls and purl the knits

Yes, just do the seed and cable sts on row 1, then go by the stitches and just refer to the chart for the rows you need to do the cable crosses on.

You’re not the only one who might have had trouble following it - I saw one project with ribbing instead of seed. That could have been on purpose though…

Ok so my colleague and I sat down and tried to figure this out. Please please tell me if this is correct

In the project pictures. I know the chart doesn’t appear to show them that way, but if you look in the projects, all the cable sts are knit on the RS. Not one of them has the cables showing as k p or seed stitch. Really, go look at the pictures of the FOs on ravelery - that can help a lot to make sense out of patterns.
