Please help...mark selv sts?

Hi there, I’m new to this forum but not to knitting.

My question is about marking stitches. I have worked with st markers before but this was only to mark a certain number of rows.

I’m knitting a very basic baby cardigan but the sleeves have stumped me! I understand the inc but have got stuck with the end of the sleeve pattern.

I understand to inc every 18th row at each end and to do this 3 times, but when work measures 16cm from beg I am to mark selv sts? then cont straight until work measures 18cm from beg. I am to then join sleeve to body between marked sts.

What are the selv sts and how to I join the sleeve to body (between marked sts) when I then work another 2cm straight? Surely if I join the sleeve to body, between where the stitches have been marked, there will be an overlap of 2cm on the inside of the work? Or do the markers move up the rows as I knit? I’m really confused!

Any help would be really appreciated. So many thanks to anyone who answers my cry of help!

I have included a screenshot of the pattern as its saved as a pdf on my phone and I cant copy a link. Hope this helps

Welcome to the forum!
The sleeve is marked at the edge stitches (called the selvedge sts). Those markers stay in place as you work the last 2cm.
That last 2cm at the top of the sleeve will slot into the body of the sweater at the notch in the front and back (red arrow).

Then you can ease the cast off sts along the vertical line at the armhole opening.
