Please Help! Increasing for a hat

Hello,

I need help with this hat pattern because I cannot for the life of me figure out how the math adds up as I’m counting the stitches on my needles.

Ok… so I have 60 stitches on my circular needles in a k2, p2 fashion (ribbing). I now have to increase using a M1 and increase an additional 40 stitches for a total of 100 stitches.

Here is an excerpt from the pattern:
“Increase 40 sts on the last round as follows:
(Work 2 sts, M1) 20 times, then (work 3 sts, M1) 20 times. [100 sts]”

So, problem is, when I do the above, it doesn’t work out - by the time I’m starting the (work 3 sts, M1) 20 times, I don’t have enough stitches in my round.

I hope I’m not confusing anyone, but can someone please help me with this. What I’m doing is, I’m knitting 2 stitches, then making 1, then purling 2 stitches, than making 1, etc, etc… I would do the same for the work 3 except I would be knitting 2, purling 1, then making 1.

I appreciate any help!

Thank you!!

How are you doing M1? It should be a ‘pick up the yarn between 2 sts and ktbl’ increase, not a kfb. If you want to use kfb you need to change the inc round to - work 1, kfb 20 times, them work 2, kfb 20 times - though the kfb may need to be pfb sometimes.

Hi Suzeeq,

I was working the M1 by picking up the yarn between the 2 sts and ktbl…

Should I change it to the other increase of kfb/pfb or will the original M1 way work?

Thanks!

The original m1 is fine, I just thought you might be using kfb instead. The way it’s written doesn’t inc evenly though - try (work 2, m1, work 3 m1) repeat 20 times.

Thank you, I will try that first & worst case, will do the other way if need be.

You said 60 sts on needles, so if you work 2 then M1 20 times you have worked 40 of 60 and added 20 (20 sts) remain to marker between rounds. Or am I counting wrong?

I’d try work 3 sts, M1, *20 repeats, then on next round you will have 80 sts to work so it would be work 4 sts, M1, *20 repeats.

This will give you 100 sts, don’t know how that will work with 2by2 rib… would it work to knit the full row on the first inc row? Then inc in k2, p2 rib on second row inc?

I’m having trouble picturing how these inc will affect in the rib pattern.

She says the pattern says to work 2, m1 20 times, then work3, m1 20 times for a total of 40 sts increased. I think it would be much more even to (work 2, m1, work 3, m1) 20 times. The repeats need to be done all on one round after the ribbing so it would turn out like a beret or slouch hat.
