I am working on the Neckdown Shaped T-Shirt by Knitting Pure and Simple #233. I do not know which cast on do I use in this situation. The directions say:
At the end of this last increase row, cast on 22 sts, join work in a round…
I have NO clue which cast on to use. If you know, please tell me, and how to do it, with pictures if possible.
The easiest is the backward loop. You can use the knitted or cabled cast on methods as well. Many cast on methods are shown here at KnittingHelp on this page. HTH
I also use the backward loop – at least I think that’s what it’s called – in this situation. However, lots of other knitters on this site prefer the “knit on” method when casting on to an existing row of stitches.
There is a video on this site showing you how to do the “knit on” cast on, but it’s really simple. Just knit your last stitch, but don’t slip it off. Instead, slip the new stitch from the right needle back to the left. That forms your first new cast on stitch. Then knit that stitch in the same manner, i.e., don’t slip it off, just slip the new stitch back to the left needle and you have 2 new sts. Continue until you have as many new sts as you need.
The problem with using backward loop for more than a few sts is that it creates loose extra yarn and loopy sts. The knit or cable cast ons are much better. Spokaloo gives a good description of the knit CO.
