Please help - have I runined blanket in washer?

Hi everyone,

I am not a knitter but am seeking advice. My child has several hand knitted baby blankets and I have always washed on gentle cycle, cold without an issue. Just did the same for a new one she received as a present and I fear I’ve ruined it. I want to cry.

After researching a bit more, my guess is it’s wool and it has felted a bit and shrunk. I did not put in the dryer. Is there anything I can do to help fix it - soak, stretch, etc?? I feel just horrible and am sure you hate people like me who ruin the gorgeous gifts you make. Thank you so much for your help.

I don’t know that there is anything you can do but the person who made it should have told you if you can’t put it in the washer and dryer. I do understand how you feel.

Did you put it in the dryer? washing on cold/gentle cycle wouldn’t have felted it.

You can try soaking it in water with fabric softener or hair conditioner added; sometimes that will loosen up the fiber that have felted together. Stretch it a little when you take it out to dry flat.

It’s not just hot water that felts, it’s agitation. It probably is wool and I agree that the person should have told you how to wash it or put a tag on it. And from ow on always ask if they don’t tell you.

I’m sorry, this happened to you. :pout: We can’t tell whether its ruined, but do try soak it and lay it flat and see if you can make it better.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the advice. The good news is that as it air dried it loosened up a bit. I am going to soak it this weekend and see if that helps as well. And from now on I will always ask before washing. I do know she is new to knitting and this is one of the first things she’s made, so maybe she wasn’t aware the thread couldn’t go in the washer either.

Thanks again for your help.
