Please help! "Every alternate row"

Hi friends! I am working on my first sweater.

I have gotten to the following section on shaping the armholes: “Continue in pattern, decreasing 1 st each end of needle on next, then every alternate row to 19 (21, 21, 23, 23, 25, 27, 27, 27, 29) sts on needle”. If I am correct, ‘every other row’ means rows 1, 3, 5, etc (as in every forward-facing row). But if I decrease on every forward-facing row, won’t I only be decreasing on one side, and won’t the sweater become lopsided? Am I misreading the directions? Should I be doing every row (as in one on the forward-facing side, then one on the back-facing side, etc.)? Please help!

Thank you!

This is the pattern: http://www.allfreeknitting.com/Mens-Knit-Sweaters/mens-weekend-sweater/ct/1

Don’t worry, you won’t end up with a lopsided sweater. You’ll be decreasing 2 stitches on every other row, 1 st each end of needle. You are correct about the every other row part, and the decreases will be worked on the right side (forward facing) rows. I would work the decreases a stitch in from the edge, that is knit or purl the first stitch, work the decrease, work the row until 3 stitches are left, make another decrease, then knit or purl the last stitch. It makes a nicer edge and is easier to seam than working the last stitch in a decrease. HTH

Thanks for the link, it is helpful!

You will be decreasing at the start and finish of your decrease rows.

Thank you all!
