Please help a Newbie!

I’m working on my first ever wearable, a simple (?) top with cap sleeves. It says “when back measures 171/4” bind off center 13 sts. Working each side separately, bind off at neck edge every 2 rows 3 sts. 2 times. Does that mean I do the row in pattern, bind off the center 13 sts (it doesn’t say how many sts. you should do before you bind off, but I have a total of 55 sts, I stink at math, so bear with me) The way I figure it, I work 21 stitches in pattern, bind off 13, than finish 21 in pattern. Please tell me that’s right LOL!! Then would I do the wrong side row in pattern, turn, work in pattern on right side row to the last 3 sts. and then bind them off, work a wrong side row, then bind off the last 3 sts. again, and I’m finished binding off the neckline for that side?? Then do I attach the yarn at the other side and do the same thing, and how do I do that. It says next “when back measures 191/4” shape shoulder: bind off at armhole edge every 2 rows 5 sts. 2 times. I really need help–don’t want to mess up another wearable. Hope this post isn’t too long. Thanks for any and all help!!!

Yes, 55-13=42, 42/2=21 each side. Regardless of the BOs you’re working in patt throughout. (Unless the patt had stated otherwise.)

On RS work 21, BO 13, work the remaining 21. On WS row, work the 21, attach second skein to other shoulder (just pick up and K with the new skein), but BO 3 sts at the start of that row. On RS, work 18 (you dec’d by 3), pick up skein on other side and BO 3. Now each shoulder has 18 sts. Work to end. Repeat the prev steps once more as instructions say to do this 2x. IMO it’s easier to work both sides at the same time so you see the shaping and work the BOs tog, essentially, rather than going back and doing the second side later.

As for the shoulders, much as before, preferably on RS, BO 5 sts at armhole, work across to neck. Pick up yarn for other shoulder, work across. Turn to WS. BO 5. Work across this and WS of other shoulder. Repeat this step as patt says to do 2x.

First, you are right in that you work 21 sts, bind off 13, then work 21. The 13 bound off sts create the neck of your garment; the 2 sections of 21 sts each are the sides.

First Repeat of Neck Edge Bind Off
Row 1 of 2: Work 21 sts to neck edge (where 13 sts were bound off); drop yarn (do not cut!) Go to next section, attach 2nd ball of yarn, bind off 3 sts, work remaining 18 sts to end of row. Turn.
Row 2 of 2: Work 18 sts to neck edge; drop yarn (do not cut!). Go to next section, pick up yarn, bind off 3 sts, then work remaining 18 sts to end of row. Turn.

Second Repeat of Neck Edge Bind Off
Row 1 of 2: Work 18 sts to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, bind off 3 sts, work remaining 15 sts to end of row. Turn
Row 2 of 2: Work 15 sts to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, bind off 3 sts, work remaining 15 sts to end of row.

Then apparently you work evenly – no more binding off – until the back is 19-1/4" and you bind off 5 sts every 2 rows 2 times, but at the ARM edge instead.

First Repeat of Shoulder Shaping
Row 1 of 2: Bind off 5 sts, work remaining 10 to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, work 15 sts to end of row. Turn.
Row 2 of 2: Bind off 5 sts, work remaining 10 sts to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, work 10 sts to end of row. Turn.

Second Repeat of Shoulder Shaping
Row 1 of 2: Bind off 5 sts, work remaining 5 sts to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, work 10 sts to end of row. Turn.
Row 2 of 2: Bind off 5 sts, work remaining 5 sts to neck edge; drop yarn. Go to next section, pick up yarn, work 5 sts to end of row.

You’ll think I’m a long-winded old woman and you’d be right! But in this case I wanted to be as detailed for you as possible. Hope you get through it! And good luck!

Thank you so much ladies!!! You can be as long winded as you like, the longer the better!!! I THINK I understand your excellent answers and will give it a try this evening. Don’t mind telling you, I’m scared to death:pray: You give great answers and I really, really appreciate your help. (By the way, you’re not allowed to sleep until I get through this) Now, to print out your answers!

For binding off at the shoulder edges, just remember you can’t BO at the end of a row, so the ones on that side will have to be done at the beginning of the WS row.

Once you see the shaping happening I think it won’t seem as daunting. What you do on one side gets repeated on the other. Each time you BO you’ll see the neckline forming, the shoulders slope appearing and it’ll make sense.

Good luck,
cam

Duh!! Does it matter that I didn’t mention I had to cast on 3 stitches at the beginning of the rows after it reached 13" for the cap sleeves. I’m just doing the sleeves in garter stitch so I don’t mess up the ribbing pattern in the top’s back and front, so do I do the shoulder shaping after I knit those 3 stitches??

No you would have to include the 3 sts in the shoulder shaping too.
