Please describe "long-tail cast-on"

Is the “long-tail cast on” the same as what I know as the provisional cast on? I was taught to crochet a chain of stitches (a few more than the number required to knit a sock) then you cast on thru the crochet loops.

If not, what is this method?

It’s the same as Double Cast-On, which is the first one listed in the Cast-On section of this website. So it’s not the same as a provisional cast-on. Hope that helps.
