Placing sts on holder

Hello! I’m currently working on a pair of fingerless gloves. I’m working on the thumb gusset. My next set of instructions is as follows; K2, CO 5 sts using the backwards loop cast-on, put 9 sts on holder for thumb, and pattern to end.

My question is: what end do I insert my “holder” into first? Would it be the K2 stitches, followed by the 5 CO sts, then the two sts from my left needle (making it a total of 9 sts)? Or would it be the opposite - start with the two sts from the left needle, then the other 7 sts (K2 stitches, followed by the 5 CO sts).

Thank you,
Isabellamila

You’re going to put the next 9 sts on a holder, not the ones you’ve already knit. So k2, slip the next 9 sts onto the holder, CO 5 and knit the next stitch from the left needle. You can CO the 5 sts either before or after you slip the other sts.
