Placing markers within a knitted project?

I am in the process of making my second grandchild a baby blanket and the pattern calls for example: P9* across to last 18 sts, place marker, K9, P3 etc. My question is about placing a marker??? I went to WalMart and bought some little rings and when it says to place marker I put one of them in. Then about 3 rows later it says to P9* across row to last 18 sts, slip marker, K9, K3 etc. Does this then mean to just slip the marker from needle to needle???

I got the pattern from the front of Debbie Macomber’s book “The Shop on Blossom Street” It is called Baby Blocks and there is a small picture on Debbie’s webpage…debbiemacomber.com. I just don’t understand what I am doing with the markers. Any help you are willing to give me would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Boonies, yes, the stitch markers move across the needles along with the knitting (just don’t knit it in). It is just a reference mark for something later in the pattern.
