Hi everyone! I am a beginner knitter and I am doing my first sweeter and I am in a crisis. I am following a Rowan patter made by Martin Storey, the sweeter is the Minn. I am going to start placing the pocket and I don’t understand the pattern.
I have already knitted the pocket linings -30 sts casted-, which are on a holder. The pattern says: “K 4, slip 30 sts onto a holder and, in their place, K across 30 sts of first pocket lining, K9”. Afterwords, the pattern continuos normal… “Dec 1 at beg of 4th and foll 6th row”…
Here my questions:
- How do I K across the stitches of the first pocket lining? Is there any video that might help me understanding?
- What should I do with the 30 sts that I place onto a holder? should I knit them on the following row?
- Can I do another type of pocket, one which makes me more confortable?
These aren’t difficult pockets to work once you get past the idea of knitting in the pocket lining. You’re already working on a great looking first sweater.
Use the holder as if it is your left hand needle. Knit right off the holder onto the right hand needle. If that’s not convenient, transfer the sts on the holder to a needle or dpn and knit them to the working needle.
The pattern will tell you later what to do with the 30 body sts that you place on a new holder. They form the upper opening of the pocket. Check perhaps under Finishing.
Dear Salmonmac,
Thanks! I will do so! I have 2 more questions. With which yard I have to knit? with the one that comes from the pocket I have on a holder, of with the one that is on the body pattern? I imagine with the second, but what should I do with the yard I will not use -the one from the pocket-?
It may not matter but I would tend to use the yarn that you have been working with for the body pattern. You can cut the yarn from the pocket lining leaving about a 6" tail to weave in later.
