I’ve seen that phrase used in reference to yarn several times recently and have no clue waht it means. Can anyone elaborate for me?
Pilling is when little nubbies – “pills” – of fibers are formed by friction. You might see them on the underarms of your husband’s or son’s favorite t-shirt. Not only are these pills unsightly, they are made of fibers that are being pulled out of the fabric so that after a while the fabric is worn thin at that point. That’s why knitters and crocheters try to avoid yarn that tends to pill easily.
Hope that helps!
Pills can be taken off, tho I have not done it myself.
It’s sorta like when a fleece blanket gets washed so many times it starts looking “nubby”.
KP has a pilling stone (removes it) and I’ve heard of “sweater shavers” that remove the pilling.
I’ve owned a sweater shaver for decades. For garments that need to be perked up, made to look like new, it works like a champ. The pilling ‘stone’ was discussed on another board and my impression was it didn’t work as well as the users had hoped.

We have a sweater stone…I hated it…and it smelled like rotten eggs…
That’s so you’ll stop wearing your rotten egg smelling sweater and then it will stop pilling
I don’t like the sweater stone either. You’re right…it stinks. And it sheds little pieces of stone all over the place when you use it. Kinda defeats the purpose of trying to make things look better. :help:
