Picking up stitches

I am picking up stitches along the botton of a noni bag

[pattern says:

pm, pu 4 sts, pm, pu 4 stitches on short end, pu 22 stitches on long ed, pu 4 sts, pu 4 sts on other short end then knit across the remaining 22 stitches.

I know how to pick up stitches. I don’t understand where to pick up the 4 stitches before the stitches on the short end. Is this attempting to make a round corner? Where and how do I pick up the four stitches without going along the short edge?

Which Noni bag is it? There looks to be a couple dozen. How many did you CO and how many rows did you knit?

I would guess that you pick up the sts in the ‘corner’ or what would be the corner. You can pick up a stitch in the front and the back loop of an existing stitch if you need to add these sts and there’s not a regular st to pick up from.

It is Noni three confections bags. I am knitting Candied orange rind. I knitted just the bottom of the bag. Twelve rows in St st. ended with a RS row. I am to pick up the stitches on the RS. This is to start knitting the bag body

i forgot. I casted on 22 stitches it’s a small evening bag

Okay, you have 12 rows in st st and you’re at the end of a row with 22 sts on it. So pu 4 sts right there at the end of the row so they fan around the corner, pu along the side of the piece, pm, then another 4 sts on the next corner, pu the 22 CO sts, another 4 on the corner, pu 4 along the other side, 4 around the corner and you’re ready to knit 22 sts.

thanks. I’ve done a lot of felting. I just didn’t know if there was a special way to pick up stitches on the corner. It’s going ok now.
