Picking up stitches thru back loop only help!

I’ve got a pattern for a vest that requires me to pick up stitches at the armholes and neck edge by picking up thru back loop ONLY.

I have NO idea how to do this !?

Maybe you pick up through just one loop of the edge stitch? That’s what it sounds like to me, but I’ve never seen this done.

Are these edges on a stitch holder? If so, I think it means to slip the stitches to your needle through the back loops so it twists the stitches. However, if these edges are already bound off and you’re really picking up new stitches, it’s rather confusing.

Either way, my guess is that it’s a tiny little design feature and wouldn’t hurt the pattern if you omitted that part. I’d pick up stitches like normal.
