Picking up stitches?! beginner here!

hi. this is my first attempt at lace knitting and i’m a bit confused.
this is the pattern i’m using:
“CO 40 Sts.
Lace Pattern:
Row 1: Knit
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: K2tog, YO (for entire row)
Row 4: Purl
Continue until piece measures 50″, then cast off”

Easy enough until i see this:

“Question – how do I end a row with a YO? I need to do that so I can keep 40 stitches, right? Am I understanding row 3 correctly?”

"Hi, Just pick up a stitch from the previous row~!"

My question is, is how do you “pick up a stitch”?

Hi and welcome to KH. Can you link to your pattern? Knowing what you’re working on can be helpful.

Yes, GG’s right. The pattern link or even the pattern name is always helpful.
Instead of picking up a stitch in this pattern sequence, you could use a backward loop cast on like this. You don’t need the beginning of the video with the slip knot of course, just the actual twisted loop cast on. Do this at the end of the row or the beginning of the next row and your pattern will maintain the correct stitch number.

yes, here it is

you’ll have to scroll down a bit

Ooooooo! Pretty. Looks like fun.

Very nice pattern! What will also work if you prefer is to yarn over at the end of the row, turn and purl the yarn over through the back loop, then continue to purl the rest of the row. Here’s the English version of ptbl and the Continental is on the Glossary page if you like.
