Hi! New here and having some trouble with the Raindrop shawl from quince & co. There are several rows that instruct an increase as m1-p. Fine. But some rows have you making a yo and then on the next row, you have to m1-p between a knit stitch and the yarn over stitch. This is a problem because the bar that normally exists between two stitches isn’t there. So do I pick up the right side of the yarn over and then very carefully ptbl which is basically a second loop over the left needle? Or do I pick up another stitch? Perhaps the left side of the knit stitch just under the just knitted stitch on the right needle? Does this make sense? I’ve tried a few different ways and nothing feels right. Thank you!
Welcome to KH!
That does sound impossible. My first thought was your suggestion to knit into the left side of the stitch below the previous knit stitch.
Can you quote the 2 rows, the one with the yo and the one with the inc? Don’t give us any more of the pattern due to copyright.
And one other check, you’re doing the yo by bringing the yarn strand to the front, then over the right needle to the back? That’s all, no automatic knit stitch after the yo?
Thank you for the reply! I had the thought that I might be doing the yo incorrectly because that too is a bit odd as you’ll see below in the pattern lines. I’ve worked several patterns with yo so I’m not new to the technique, but I still went back ans checked my work a million times (and frogged this three times already)
. Anyway, here is the pattern:Row 12: Sl1 (purlwise), p2, yo, sk2p, yo, p2, k1
Row 13: Sl1 (purlwise), k2, m1-p (tbl), purl to last 3 sts, k3 - 10 sts.
To answer your question about the yo, I’m taking the yarn over the right needle after a purl, slipping one knitwise, k2tog and then passing the slipped stitch over the two together. Here’s a picture after row 12.
Either I’m doing something grossly wrong or I’m surprised no one has raised this issue before.
Thank you for your help!
That looks correct and the yarn overs look fine to me.
And row 13 does indeed place the inc between the knit and yo. You could do a loop increase but your suggestion of knitting into the left loop of the row below is a neater inc to me. It might be worth sending a message to the designer just to check her suggestion.
Thank you so much for your suggestions! I’m glad to know I’m not going crazy here. I sent a note to Quince yesterday but I imagine I won’t hear anything until Monday earliest. Just surprised there isn’t more detail about this transition in the pattern. It occurs every 5 or so rows so it’s not an insignificant number. I’ll post what they say when I hear a response. Just in case anyone else encounters the same issue.
