picking up neckline sts

I am working on Dorotha polo by Gregoriafibers (previously asked a question regarding to the pattern…)

I finished seeming the shoulders (its a bottom up piece) and have to pick up sts on neckline to make it look like a polo shirt.

Following exactly what the pattern says, I have now 55 sts bound off at the back and 14 sts each front which all have to be picked up to create a neckline, like the pic below, shown in red line:

my question is that the pattern says to pick up 84 sts for my size.
I am not so sure how it can be 84 sts since my total sts would be 63 sts (35+14+14), and even including a few sts on sides wouldn’t make it up to 84 sts… Why would the pattern asks to pick up more sts than there is?

The pattern wants a fuller collar which will fold over and spread out requiring more than the number of bound off sts. Pick up as many sts as you reasonably can and you can always adjust the stitch number on the first row.

Got it! Then should I pick up two in one st for example or is it better to pick up 63 sts and increase the number in the first row?

You can try that or try picking up a stitch in the V and in the space between two Vs. You won’t have to do this every stitch. Space these double pick ups around the neck and as I mentioned, you can always increase on the first row of the collar.
