Pick up and knit evenly along edge

Hi, my pattern has come out of a book so unfortunately can’t link to pattern. I’m making a baby cardigan at the moment and have got to a part where I have to make the left border. This is what it says:

With RS facing, pick up and knit 59 sts evenly along left front edge and 7 stitches from rib. 66 sts.

It then goes on to tell me to knit 2x2 rib which I have no problem with. The part I’m unsure on is, what does it mean by knit evenly? I have a rib pattern at the bottom of my work so I assume that it means I have to make sure I pick up 7 stitches from my rib pattern??

The pattern just wants to make sure you distribute the picked up sts fairly equally along the left border. Space them out ~evenly. Yes, you’re right, the pattern also recommends picking up 7 sts along the bottom rib.

When picking up stitches for a button band, it generally works out if you pick up three in a row and skip the fourth. Then you don’t have too many stitches and it’s not puckered.
