I’m looking for some help here…
After knitting the left side of a cardigan that I am working on, I am having a lot of trouble reversing the pattern for the right side. Here is the pattern:
LEFT FRONT: With No. 5 needles, cast on 30(32-34) sts. Row 1: * P 1, K 1, repeat from * to last 9 sts, P 1, K into 3rd st on left hand needle from front of work, then K the first and second sts letting the loop of 3rd st drop off needle, P 1, K 1, P 1, K 1, P 1. Row 2: P 1, K 1, P 1, K 1, P 4, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * to end of row. Repeat these 2 rows for 1 inch. Change to No. 6 needles and, keeping 9 sts at front edge in pattern as established, work remaining sts in stockinette st until piece measures 7(7 ½-8) inches.
RIGHT FRONT: Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and pattern and forming buttonholes opposite pins on left front. BUTTONHOLE: Starting at front edge, work 2 sts, y o, work 2 sts tog, work to end of row.
Any guidance/interpretation would be GREATLY appreciated!
Welcome to KnittingHelp!
Such an adorable baby sweater.
You could do row 1 for the right front:
P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K into 3rd st on left hand needle from front of work,h then K the first and second sts letting the loop of 3rd st drop off needle, P1 (that’s the first 9sts) and continue the row in either ribbing or stockinette. .
For row 2, work to the last 9sts, P1, P4, K1, P1, K1, P1
I will give that a try - thanks so much!
I will give that a try - thanks so much!!
Auroreorange, I too am knitting this cardigan and am wondering how you went with the instructions from salmonmac. I did rewrite the reversal of pattern the same way, but when I started knitting it, it didnt seem to look right. Please let me know how it went.
Marg.
Hi and welcome!
Let’s hope the original poster comes back and lets us know how it went.
Can you post a photo of your knitting or tell us what doesn’t seem to be right? It should be a little cable cross on the front which you could do with a cable needle if that’s easier.
Thank you salmonmac for the welcome. The part where you suggest “K into 3rd st on left hand needle from front of work,h then K the first and second sts letting the loop of 3rd st drop off needle”,and you mention it should be a little cable cross, I was thinking that when you reverse the pattern front for the right side the ‘cable cross’ should go in the opposite direction on the right front than the left front (where i have the squares on the image), but when knitted it doesn’t it goes the same way and looks a little odd. Am I correct in saying that or is it impossible to actually have it going the opposite way. I hope my image is clear enough for you to see what I mean.
You could have it cross either way, depending on what you would like. You can either work it as a twist stitch in the opposite direction (your directions give a right twist so you’d want to make a left twist) or you could use a cable needle to make the operation a little easier.
For the left twist, you could knit the second and thrid sts on the needle from the back and then knit the first st. This video shows it for a single stitch but you would have to knit 2 sts from the back.

I find this very fiddley to do.
Using a cable needle, you would slip the first st onto the cable needle and hold in front, knit sts two and three and then knit the stitch from the cable needle.
it looks quite nice to me and i think it’s going to be an adorable sweater.
salmonmac, thanks, I’ll give it a go. I’ve left doing the right side for now and will finish the rest of the cardigan first and then knit the right front. The video makes it look so easy. I think I will try that and see how it looks.
