Pattern question

I am knitting a purse to be felted. While knitting around the bottom the instructions were to purl 31 stitches and place a safety pin as a marker and leave the marker there and not carry up the rows. You then knit another 31 stitches forming a square for the bottom. Now I’m binding off at the top and the instructions say “drop the stitch above the marker down to the marker and pick up two strands at a time back to the top using a crochet hook. Place the last stitch back on the left needle and continue to bind off.” Can anyone figure out what this means? I’m stumped. Thanks much!!!

Without knowing the pattern at all, this is what it sounds like:

Let’s pretend you had 20 rows that you knit beyond that marker. You are now going to drop the stitches, letting them “ladder” down, down those 20 rows. When you get to that point, now take a crochet hook and catch them back up to the top again-- it’s as if you’re fixing a dropped stitch-- BUT you’re going to do it 2 strands at a time, so you’ll catch 2 strands of the ladders, and so 2 X 10 = 20, you’ll do it 10 times. This will scrunch up your fabric. Does that make sense when you look at the photo of the final outcome? Where did you get the pattern? Can you provide a link to it, or if it’s in a book or magazine, tell us the name and page number?

Oh my gosh that makes so much sense! I’ve read the pattern out loud about 20 times hoping it would click but it just didn’t.
I bought the pattern and yarn at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival last year and the pattern was written by an individual. There is no contact information on the pattern at all. Lessen learned for the next time I buy a pattern that’s not published! Thank you so much!! Onward!

Sorry to be such a duh over this…when I am pulling the stitches back up to the top do I weave them back and forth through the ladders as if I have dropped a stitch or just pull them up on the inside back to the top.
Thanks very very much!!!

I would do it as if fixing a dropped stitch-- there’s a video on here to show what that looks like. Again, this is without seeing the pattern. . .but I would think it should look like you’ve fixed a ladder, that you should see regular knit sts after you’re through with this step. Did the pattern writer provide a photo with the pattern? does that gathering/rouching look right? It may be difficult to see anyway, because it’s felted. If there’s no contact info, did the person give their name? Unless it’s Sue Smith, try looking the name up on the Internet.

Oh, Oh, Oh, I finally get the whole thing!!! Now it seems so easy it’s ridiculous! I’ve just done one side and yes the pattern says it will be slightly pulled up when finished. It was hard to distinguish on the picture like you said because of the felting. Thank you again so much!!!
