Pattern question

I am new to knitting, and signed up to make prayer shawls for our church. My pattern is telling me to measure 32 inches from cast on edge, ending with an even number of stitches.

I’m confused - is it 32 inches from the bottom directly up through the middle to the needles, or 32 inches on the diagonal - up the side?

Please post a link to the pattern if it’s free or a picture if it’s not if you can. It helps us help you.

Is this done diagonally?

Wow - that was really fast! Thank you so very much for your help - geez, I don’t know if it is a free pattern or not, it was written down for me by a friend and I don’t have a picture. I am not making it on the diagonal it is increased from one cast on and one up from there in each row. I will have to take a picture of it before I give it to the church.

Thanks again for your help!

I’d say the 32 inches is up from the point at the bottom up to the needles.

That seems to be the general consensus - I guess I have lots more to knit before I finish the project! Thanks so very much for taking the time to help me out!

An item knitted on the diagonal is where you start with just a stitch or 3 and increases at the ends of the rows. So it sounds like yours is and I bet it should be measured from the point along one edge.
