Pattern question - please help!

Pattern question - please help! My pattern says k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th stitch over the 1st stitch - does this mean do the same thing as a cast/bind off? Thank you!

It’s like a cast off in the sense that you lift a stitch over the stitch closest to the tip of the right needle. Unlike a bind off, you’re going to ultimately have 4sts lifted over that single stitch closest to the needle tip.

What pattern are you making?

Thank you for this. It’s a Sirdar snuggly DK crofter baby cardigan and I’m
having all sorts of problems - the first row has the cast off stitches
which I posted about but I can’t get the second row to work stitch number
wise. I’m short every time I try it. Thank you!

The second row (or a subsequent row) may have some increase sts to compensate for those lost in row 1. Of course, it’s also possible that row 1 itself has these increases.

Can you quote all of row 1 and row 2 please. Not the whole pattern because of copyright problems but just those 2 rows. Also let us know the size you’re making (1st, 2nd, 3rd number) and the number of sts before you start row 1.

Hi there, thank you for all this. I am doing 1-2 years, and have to cast
on 67 stitches.

First row: K1, yfwd, *k5, slip the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th st over the 1st
st, yfwd, rep from * to last st, k1
second row: P1, *(yon, k1tbl) in next st, P1, rep from * to end

I should end up with 57 stitches, but I was sitting at 40 something before
I ripped it out! I can’t work out how many I should have after row 1, as
if I knew which row I was going wrong in, it might help! Thank you so
much.

I can’t tell if it’s an error in the pattern or if maybe the sts are increased in a later row. You start row 1 with 67sts, end the row with 29sts. Row 2 starts with 29sts and ends with 43sts.

I see several Sirdar patterns for Snuggly baby crofter dk on Ravelry. Is there a particular name for your pattern? I’m wondering if there are any corrections for the pattern. (maybe another yarn over in the repeat to get to 57sts??)

That’s very sweet. Unfortunately I can’t find any list of corrections. Best to contact Sirdar helpline and ask.

Hi there, I’ve just tried it and it’s not worked
again. As I’m new to knitting, I get stuck on patterns but I wondered if there was a reason there were brackets in row 2? It looks like I would be short of about 14 stitches. I’ll email Sirdar and ask though. Thank you though

Yes, as I posted, the correct count according to the row given is 14sts short (see post above). Unless there is another increase or yarn over between the asterisks, the row only adds up to 43sts. I would wait till you hear from Sirdar before going any further.

There is a reason for the asterisks in row 2 and that is to mark the sts to be repeated. As for the sts in parentheses, it may be that they should be a (k1, yo, k1) in a single stitch instead of the (yo, k1) in a single stitch. That would be my best guess at how to work this row.

REPEAT directions between ,
Knit 1, yarn forward (bring under right needle and over to knit the next stitch), Knit 5 and then slip 4 of those stitches that you just knit over the last (5th) stitch just knitted, You have decreased 4 stitches. Yarn forward and repeat

67 minus first and last knit stitch leaves 65 stitches for pattern divided by 5 = 13 patterns or

ROW 1: K1,

yfwd, *K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, 10 sts

yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, 10 sts

yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K1 6 sts

K1, = 28 sts TOTAL

ROW 2: Purl 1, *(yarn over needle, knit 1 through the back loop of the next stitch), Purl 1 and repeat from * to end ----

57 sts minus first and last purl equals 55 stitches for pattern, one increase for each stitch

ROW 2: P1,

yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, 20 stitches (10 stitches from Row 1)

yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, 20 stitches (10 stitches from Row 1)

yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, p1, yon, k1 tbl, 16 stitches (8 stitches from Row 1)

P1

Always repeat directions between astericks, braces and parentheses the number of times given.
