I am looking for a pattern for my 4 year old granddaughter to make leggings or tights. I have made her leg warmers, but this is for spring weather. Would I just knit the leg warmers longer?? I found a pattern for long legwarmers, but I don’t know how to make them smaller. Can someone tell me how to decrease the size and increase the length? Thanks much.
I like the pattern you linked to. It’s not easy to find a pattern for that age although there was this one. Not as simple and pretty as the one you linked to however.
You can modify the pattern you linked to by determining the number of sts/inch that you get with your main yarn and needles. if you can determine the measurement around your granddaughter’s calf then use the sts/inch to determine the number of sts you’ll need for the body of the leggings. The length adjustment is easy as you will knit the leggings to the measurement you’d like. There doesn’t seem to be any shaping.
Thank you. I know, I love the one I linked to also.
I will try doing as you say by determining the #of stitches. However I noticed that this pattern says it is 5 inches wide and the other warmers I made for her were 8 inches wide at the calf. By my girl is only 3 1/2, and the one in my link seems like a teenager. Not sure how to gauge that one.
Thank you for your quick response!
Yes, the ones in the link are definitely not a child’s size. They’re measured lying flat so they’re about 10inches around which would fit an adult. That measurement is probably smaller than the actual leg so that they fit snugly and stay up.
Oh that’s a good point I didn’t think about them being measured flat. I will adjust the size though. I like that I can have the ties on the top in case they are too loose.
