Pattern Query -would like some help

I like to call myself and amateur knitter I am semi experienced. Anyway to get to the point I am knitting a child Cardigan and the pattern says the following,

Dec 1 st at each end of next and 9(9:8:8:8) foll 4th rows, then foll 6(8:12:14:16)alt rows

Please help explain totally confused

Hi Thelma,
Your pattern tells you to decrease 1st at each end of the next row,call this row1, and the nine following 4th rows . So you decrease on rows 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,33 and 37 after this you decrease every other row 6 times .
