This may be a stupid question, but I’m trying to knit this scarf and the pattern says cast on 35 stitches provisionally, then Row 1 is K6, (ssk, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, p4) twice, ssk, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, k6 and Row 2 is K6, p5, k4, p5, k4, p5, k6. My problem is, when I get to the end of row 1, I’m short 6 stitches! I don’t understand where I’m going wrong, I’m not dropping stitches, and it’s not a pattern mistake because no one else seems to have had a problem. I’m still pretty new at this, so I’m sure it’s something I’m doing. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it!

Hmm…I counted the stitches in Row 1 and I come out with 35. Somewhere it sounds like you’re doing an extra decrease or not doing the YO properly?
When I count Row 1 I count 41 stitches. So I must be doing something wrong but I don’t know what.
You mean when you count the sts the pattern has you work for the row you get 41? The YOs don’t use a stitch, they add one that the decs take away. Here’s how to break down R 1 with stitch counts -
K6, uses 6, leaves 6
ssk uses 2, leaves 1
yo, uses 0, leaves 1
k1, uses 1, leaves 1
yo, uses 0, leaves 1
k2tog, uses 2, leaves 1
p4, uses 4, leaves 4
twice, everything after k6, we’re at 24 sts by this time.
ssk, uses 2, leaves 1
yo, uses 0, leaves 1
k1, uses 1, leaves 1
yo, uses 0, leaves 1
k2tog, uses 2, leaves 1
k6 uses 6, leaves 6
If you add up both the sts used and the sts left, it’s 35
There are 6 yo’s in the row. Check the video on the Glossary page for yo and make sure you’re doing it correctly. It doesn’t use a st. It creates a loop over the needle between sts.
Oh! I see what I was doing. I wasn’t doing the yo correctly. I thought you brought the yarn over and then knit into the next stitch and then knit another stitch. Ok, so that’s where my 6 stitches were going! Thanks for the help, I knew it was probably something stupid I was doing!
You knit into the next stitch[I] [B]in the pattern[/B][/I], not just A stitch which isn’t in there. It’s a very common new to lace knitting mistake though.
