Pattern problem

Sirdar pattern 5294.
6 row pattern which should be easy but I don’t understand row 5 -
…P1, insert right hand needle through 3rd, 2nd and 1st sts on left hand needle and K1, yfwd, K1.

If this means Knit 3 together you lose 2 stiches but yfwd knit 1 only makes up 1 extra stich.
Am I missing something really simple?

Welcome to KH. What pattern are you using? This should be explained in the pattern with other terminologies. I’m thinking you would need to insert the needle from left to right to go through the stitches in the order given. K1, yfwd, K1 results in k1,yo,k1 which is a two stitch increase. This is the same as k1,yo,k1 in one stitch.

Welcome to the forum!

There’s a video the goes through the steps of the pattern stitch. The trick is not to take the sts off the needle after the initial k3tog.
Many thanks to healthknut for the fine pattern notes including the video of the pattern stitch.

Thank you. The video was helpful although how you were supposed to work that out from what was in actual pattern i don’t know.

I agree. I never would have gotten it from the row directions. It’d be easier to try and work it out from looking at the sweater. Anyway, thanks to GG for explaining it, to whoever posted the video and to healthknut for linking to it. It’s a very sweet looking cardigan and should be fun to knit.

Wow, no…I’d never have figured that out from the pattern text! Cool-looking stitch though.

I knew I was strange. That’s why it made sense to me. Thank you for linking that wonderful video!

The 3, 2, 1 stitch order was a dead giveaway for me.
