Pattern problem, too many stitches leftover

Hi, I’m wondering if you could help me. I’m knitting my first ever jumper and I’ve got stuck on a section. I’m knitting the back piece and have got to the end of the section and I have more stitches left on my needle than is necessary. I had the correct amount of stitches left in the last section which is 69.
The next section said to
1st row - (RS). K2. Ssk. Knit to last 4. k2tog. k2
2nd row - purl
Repeat last 2 rows 16 times.

And at the end I should have 35 stitches remaining, but I have 51. Where have I gone wrong and how can I fix this as I don’t understand how I’ve gone wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi & welcome!
For that section, you should be dec 2 sts every RS row for a total of 34 st. It calls for paired dec 2 st in from the start and end of each dec row. You either missed some dec or accidentally did some yo. I’m guessing the former. If not using st markers, I suggest putting a sm after first 2 st an a sm before last 2 st. This will help you remember that every RS row to do dec after the first sm and immediately before the 2nd sm.

Hi, @rcubed thank you so much for your help! I’ve been ssk and k2tog on the RS for the last 16 rows is this not decreasing? Do I need to continue with this for more than the 16 rows it states until I get to 34 sts? I’m really sorry if I’ve misunderstood, I’ve only ever knitted scarves and hats before this and I haven’t been knitting for very long so I’ve still got a lot to learn. I’ve attached the first page of the pattern below just incase it helps, I’ve hilighted the section I’m stuck on in red and I’m doing it in a size XL.

Hi
It sounds like you just didn’t keep going long enough.
The 2 rows are done once
Then the 2 rows are repeated 16 times more
That is a total of 34 rows (not 16)

The decrease Row takes place a total of 17 times (the first time and 16 times more). 2 stitches decrease each right side row.
17 x 2 = 34
69 - 34 = 35

So I think you can just keep going.

If you have not done these correctly and need to rip back you could try a life line lower down to save your stitches before you start to rip back.
Hope this helps

You’re very welcome.mits nice to be able to offer a bit of help here and there.

I hope we get to see your finished project, it’s always lovely to see what people have made.

Disregard what I originally typed here. Running back and forth to vet so my mind’s a little off

You have exactly 16 stitches more than you should.
I have a guess.
Did you only knit 16 more rows instead of 32 rows called for? (2 rows times 16 = 32) just knit 8 more repeates of rows 1&2.
