I usually move on to something else for awhile and in the meantime look for patterns that I know I"ll be successful at for the one that is a problem.
It is not that I can not knot any number of patterns that I can fined it is that I want one that really suits him best. I love him to much to give him just any old scarf.
I agree with Jan. I totally understand the feeling of wanting to knit the most perfect gift for someone! Sometimes it is useful to step away and knit something else. I have often found that when I am working on something else inspiration strikes for the gift. Good luck finding what you are looking for!
I finely gave up on fineding the right patter and desided to make my own. I fined my seld having to do that more and more lately… Maybe I am to picky.
