Pattern instruction q

I have a pattern for front legs of a stuffed animal. The part I am stuck on is the following:

k14. Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle. Cont on these 14 sts, dec 1 st each end of next and following alt rows until there are 8 sts, then on every row until there are 2 sts. Work 2tog.

My question is what does “turn” mean? Also, can anyone break this down for me. Thanks!

what does turn mean?
exactly what you think (can’t think!)

you work (knit or purl as needed) 14 (even if there are more than 14 stitches )

you turn (and leave those other stitches on the needle unknit.)
you work back and leave stitches undone at the other end.

Row 1 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 2 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 3 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 4 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 5 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 6 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 7 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Row 8 KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

(above is a sample, not your pattern)
the red stitches are the ones not worked.
row 1 all stitches are worked
row 2, 1 is "skipped (the work is turned before that stitch is worked)

row 3, the last stitch on the other end is skipped…
Row 4, 2 stitches skipped (one end)
Row 5, 2 stitches skipped (each end)

in your pattern
R1, skip last stitch
R 2, slip last stitch
R3/4 no change
R5 skip last 2 stitches
R6, skip last 2 stitches
R7/8 no change.
(and continue 2 row of skip, 2 rows of no skip, till there are 8 stitches (in center, still being worked)

then skip ever row,
(7 stitches, 6 stitches, 5 stitches, …
until there are 2 stitches (in center!)

your knitting will sort of look like a mountain
/\ (with stitches along the side!)

its sounds weird, but its a pretty common practice… (socks, booties, gussets of all sorts,

the technique is called “short rows”
(think of short sheeting a bed!)
