Pattern help

first time crocheting an afghan. make it to row 4 and can’t seem to make it work.

With larger hook, ch 214. BORDER- Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn - 213 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, * tr in next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * across; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc and tr across; turn.

Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as a tr), skip first sc; skip next 2 sc, tr in next sc, ch 1, working all in front of last tr made, tr in first of 2 skipped sc - CRtr made; * ch 1, skip next sc, CRtr over next 3 sc; rep from * to last sc; tr in last sc; turn.

I am getting 8 stitches per CRtr assuming that I am doing it correctly. I end up with 7 stitches left over at the end of the row. Please help!

Good Morning! I am going to assume this is an American pattern. If not then it changes so much. I worked up a small sample of your pattern.
“Row 4: Ch 4 (counts as a tr), skip first sc; skip next 2 sc, tr in next sc,[COLOR=“Red”]4 stitches used here, The three skipped and the fourth stitch being the stitch for the treble. The part that follows is done in the two stitches behind the treble just made. So basically you are doing a sk one st and three trebles in the next 3 sc only two are done behind the first one made. Uses up only four sts per CRtr made.[/COLOR] ch 1, working all in front of last tr made, tr in first of 2 skipped sc - CRtr made; * ch 1, skip next sc, CRtr over next 3 sc; rep from * to last sc; tr in last sc; turn.”
[COLOR=“Red”]213/4= 53 with the last sc left for the final tr.[/COLOR] I hope that helps.

[COLOR="#330099"]This may help. I had to use dot (periods) for spacing.
The ‘o’ represent the chain stitches,
the diagonal lines \ or / represent the post of the treble crochet (TR) stitches, and
the ‘x’ represents the single crochet stitches.

On row 4 your chain for counts as the first tr (above sc 1)
the first tr is into the 4th sc of the previous row.
Then chain and tr in to the 2nd sc, working in front of the the previous tr so the new tr crosses in front of it.
Repeat begins *
ch 1 (one sc is skipped by the chain [5 in the “drawing” above])
Tr in the fourth sc (sc 8 above)
ch 1
tr in front of previous tr into 2nd skipped sc (sc 6 above).
Repeat from * across. (4 sc used or skipped per repeat plus on sc on each end as a selvage edge, the beginning ch4 and the tr into last sc).

You are welcome! Thanks for the diagram, Jack! You know as I was doing a small swatch of the pattern I realized what an interesting way to do it.
