I am trying to help my sister with the following and since I’ve never done this I don’t know what to do?
Neck Shaping:
Bind off 5 sts (neck edge), K to end. [I understand that] Cont to bind off from neck edge 3 sts twice, 1 (1,2,2) sts once. ( ) Bind off rem 19 (22, 24,27) sts for shoulder.
So I think I may have got it - that isn’t the instructions for just one row - the first row you bind off 5 and knit to the end. Then the next row bind off 3 knit to the end. Next row bind off 3 knit to the end. Next bind off 2 and knit to the end. Then I suppose she just binds off the left front. Does that sound right?
Yes and no. You have each row figured out, but you have to make sure the bind off is always happening at the neck edge, and not the armhole edge. So for the first row, she will bind of the appropriate number of stitches. For the next row, when she flips the knitting she’ll be going in the other direction so she needs to knit and then bind of the appropriate number of stitches at the neck edge. She’ll flip the knitting again, and because she’s still at the neck edge, she will bind off the stitches, and then knit the rest of the row.
Basically, the bind-offs all need to happen at the same edge of the knitting, and not necessarily at the first of each row.
I’m not sure if I’ve explained that clearly though. I hope that helped?
I think the easiest way I can think of to explain it is that you should determine which side of the sweater will be up against the neck and which part will be by the arm. All of the bind-offs need to be on the edge by the neck.
I wish I could show you in person. I don’t suppose your sister will wait until next weekend? :teehee:
Dilly’s got the right idea, but you can’t bind off at the end of the row.
[i]Bind off 5 sts (neck edge), K to end. Cont to bind off from neck edge 3 sts twice, 1 (1,2,2) sts once. ( Shrugging shoulders ) Bind off rem 19 (22, 24,27) sts for shoulder.
Bind off 5, knit to end.
Work next row
Bind off 3, knit to end.
Work next row
Bind off 3, knit to end.
Work next row
Bind off 1, knit to end
Work next row.
Repeat the last two rows if doing a larger size.
